Initial Teacher Training (ITT) route to QTS with PGCE from Sheffield Hallam University

Successful candidates should normally demonstrate that they already have:

  • For Secondary and Primary routes: grade C GCSEs in English and Mathematics (or standard equivalent);
  • For Primary only: grade C or above in Science at GCSE (or standard equivalent);
  • A good grade at A Level in relevant subject (or standard equivalent);
  • A minimum of 5 days recent and relevant experience in a secondary school with evidence of what has been learned from this experience;
  • An ability to relate to and engage with young people;
  • A clear commitment to a career in teaching;
  • Effective communication skills, including use of written and spoken English;
  • Strong subject knowledge, including a breadth of knowledge, as appropriate;
  • An ability to explain concepts clearly;
  • A range of personal characteristics including flexibility, independence and resilience;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with evidence of high levels of Emotional Literacy and Emotional Intelligence;
  • Leadership potential including evidence of Vision;
  • The ability to work well effectively as part of a group;
  • Initiative;
  • Knowledge of issues linked to the phase of education (Primary or Secondary) for which you are applying to train to teach.

The applicant must already be in the process of obtaining or already hold:

  • A first or second class honours degree (or equivalent) from a UK university (or equivalent), completed before entry (usually in the relevant/a related subject specialism but all subjects will be considered);
  • A Pass in the Professional Skills Tests in Mathematics and English.
    As part of any offer made following interview, all candidates will be required to gain the following as part of any conditions:

    • A satisfactory health clearance
    • Clearance through an Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check (unless you already have enhanced DBS clearance and are currently subscribed to the DBS Update Service – see https://www.gov.uk/dbs-update-service)

Assessment Only route to QTS

If you have substantial experience of teaching in at least two different educational settings and can demonstrate that you already meet the Teachers’ Standards, then the YTCA SCITT Assessment Only route could be for you. This route does not include any training.

You will also need to be able to demonstrate that you meet all of entry requirements for Initial Teacher Training (above) before commencing your Assessment Only with us:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification;
  • GCSEs (or Level 2 qualification equivalent) at grade C or above (grade 4 or above for new GCSEs awarded from Summer 2017 onwards) in English and Maths (plus Science, if you are applying for Primary);
  • That you have been cleared as ‘fit to practice’ through a Health Questionnaire;
  • That you have passed the Professional Skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy;
  • That you hold a current Enhanced DBS clearance and are subscribed to the Update Service OR that you are cleared for an Enhanced DBS before starting your Assessment Only.

Applications for this route are made directly to the YTCA SCITT. You need to submit the following as your application:

Following review of your application, if you meet the eligibility criteria and have submitted a convincing application, you will be invited for interview. At interview, you will be expected to bring a Portfolio of Evidence which contains examples of how you meet the Teachers’ Standards (this should include the evidence cited in your Application Audit which you will have submitted as part of your application). If successful at this stage, you will be offered a place on the YTCA SCITT Assessment Only route to QTS.
