Horizon Community College opened in September 2012 as a result of the amalgamation of two local schools of Holgate and Kingstone. Initial Teacher Trainees will experience state of the art facilities for 21st century teaching and learning. Horizon Community College is a fully comprehensive college with an intake of students of broadly average ability against national comparisons. There is a wide range of ability. Some weaknesses are shown in literacy skills across all year groups and this is an important focus area for the College. Key Stage 2 results indicate an improving intake on average, rising to national average in Key Stage 3 intakes, particularly in current Year 9 which coincides with Teacher Assessment in Y6 being recorded by most feeder primaries.
The College is organised in a ‘school-within-a-school’ model, where each of the five schools (Years 7-11) has their own physical school and school leadership team. The 5 Heads of School are senior Assistant Head-teachers. There are close relationships with feeder primaries which are led by a team of Community Enterprise Co-coordinators.
